South Africa imposes anti-dumping duties on structural steel imports from China and Thailand

admin

According to Business Insider Africa, South Africa has imposed definitive anti-dumping duties on structural steel imports from China and Thailand.

The tariffs are set at 74.98% for Chinese steel and 20.32% for Thai steel, and these rates should be in effect for five years.

The decision was made following an investigation by South Africa’s International Trade Committee, which concluded that imports from these countries were being sold at below-market prices and injured local producers. This action followed provisional duties introduced in 2024, which were imposed at lower rates. The domestic steel sector faces challenges caused by low domestic demand and large volumes of cheap imported raw materials.

This situation has led to the fact that some major manufacturers have initiated temporary stops at individual enterprises. Imports account for more than a third of the country’s total steel consumption, with China being the source of most of these imports. The new measures are expected to help local companies regain market share, maintain price stability and promote investment in production and job creation. Brazil also imposed its own five-year anti-dumping duties on some Chinese steel products earlier this year.
