Papermaking

Outokumpu's Lena Wegrelius estimates that a large pulp and paper complex will use 10,000 tons of stainless steel. Many different alloy materials are used in different processes such as cooking (sulfate fiber digester), washing, sieving, bleaching, chemical recovery, pulp recovery and paper machine.
The sulfated fiber digester and the washing and sieving processes use closed systems to reduce pollution emissions, which enhances the corrosiveness of the production environment. Therefore, from the use of non-alloy steel to stainless steel (316L or duplex steel is preferred, followed by 304L or 316L).
In the Cl2 and ClO2 bleaching process, high-molybdenum austenitic stainless steel 254 SMO® is also used to solve the corrosion problem caused by the closed treatment system; and according to different environmental conditions, SAF 2507 or 2205 can be selected as an alternative material.
Another place where austenitic stainless steel or duplex stainless steel is used instead of carbon steel is a chemical liquid storage tank for chemical recovery, where more maintenance is required due to corrosion.

he pulp and paper industry is a huge consumer of stainless steel. As time goes by, the duplex utilization rate continues to rise. At present, all evaporators, fading towers, sludge digesters, storage tanks and other auxiliary equipment are made of duplex stainless steel. The characteristics of duplex stainless steel materials make it a success in the entire industry.
In 2018, in a paper mill in China, products such as stainless steel plates, isometric steel, etc. were used, which has good stability while quickly setting up shelves.
