Because of its very good hygienic properties, stainless steel has become a widely used material in the food and beverage industry. Compared with other fields, such as oil and gas production, the surface condition is very important. Not only is it resistant to corrosion, but its extremely hygienic and non-adhesive properties determine the desired surface condition.

At the legal level, the main laws are "Food Safety Law", "Standardization Law", "Product Quality Law" and "Consumer Rights Protection Law". "Food Safety Law" links the quality of food contact materials with food safety; "Standardization Law" requires enterprises to produce according to standards; "Product Quality Law" and "Consumer Rights Protection Law" require enterprises to actively disclose the stainless steel grades used in products .
What needs special attention is that the newly revised Food Safety Law in 2015 and the compulsory national food safety standard (GB4806 series of standards) promulgated in 2016 jointly define "food contact materials" as a concept with legal significance.
At the standard level, stainless steel standards, stainless steel food contact product standards and food safety standards all clearly recommend 300 series austenitic stainless steels as food contact materials.
In 2018, in a sugar factory in Mexico, sanitary stainless steel pipes, accessories and other products were used, which will not affect the taste and appearance of food, are not easily corroded, and the surface is easy to clean and disinfect.
